The crowd in the packed bar roars.
It doesn’t matter at what great score
or defense against a score. It doesn’t matter
what sport, on which of the dozen screens.
The crowd in the packed bar roars,
and the sound x-rays my soul.
The sound is the sound of all of us,
shouting through each other’s throats.
The sound is the sound
of the archangel sounding
the beginning or end of the world.
The crowd in the packed bar
roars. Our singular heart
skips a beat.
ABOUT THE POET
Freeman Ng (www.AuthorFreeman.com) is a former Google software engineer and the author of Bridge Across the Sky, a YA verse novel based on the Chinese immigration experience through Angel Island (Atheneum Books for Young Readers); Basho’s Haiku Journeys, a haiku picture book (Stone Bridge Press); and Haiku Diem, a daily haiku feed.
