Leicestershire, England
FOR EMILY
My transatlantic cousins call me
“across the pond.”
The sky is metallic,
The weather indecisive.
We bicker, brewing storms in teacups,
Yet we share history.
I trace a finger
across a folded roadmap.
Like Atlas, I shoulder geography.
“Boston,” “York,” and “Aberdeen”
rise beneath my fingernail.
I’ve seen them before:
on American road signs,
in American films.
We share our names.
Yet not all your names
began on these shores.
Some come from Dakota,
Spanish and French.
You are a treasure
shaped by many hands.
I am proud to know
that I, like many, am like you.
We share.
