COMMON THREADS
What does that mean? I often find words come
out of dark crannies in lost memories they come
and when I look them up the intuited definition is
strangely accurate to memories meaning recalled.
This amuses me, as i find my memory to be quirky
in the best of times and sorely lacking more often.
So common threads, let’s break it down to parts.
Common: ordinary, familiar, of lower class status.
Threads: thin twisted fibers, or the smallest unit
within a process that enables parallel processing.
Now reassembled as one, common threads:
A recurring theme that connects all parts of a story.
Yes these are the word that surfaced this morning
to describe my hopes and dreams for our cities.
We are weaving many threads together to become
more whole, more honoring of all we come from,
what we carry with us or what we choose to shed.
A majestic multi-colored coat to keep us all warm.
ABOUT THE POET
Lee Truer was born and raised in a bookish family in New York City. Her father worked in publishing and her mother was a published author of non-fiction with a poet’s soul. She has lived in the St. Paul/Minneapolis area for several decades and has never been prouder of her adopted home than now. Lee recently retired from teaching and counseling, and remains active in the arts through poetry, painting, and serving on the board of an educational non-profit. Recently 4 of her poems were featured in the online journal The Raven’s Perch. Her artwork has been sold both locally and internationally and she was recognized with a Star of Chrysalis award for her work with women and children. Lee enjoys gardening and time spent in nature.
