Stormy Powell 2

Saint Paul, MN

COMMON THREADS

A moment in the night,
Nary a star in sight,
Yet still,
The river sparkles bright.

The river welcomes me.

The midnight hues,
The yellows and blues—
Behold the dazzling views
As the river flows on through.

The city welcomes me.

My skin the breeze caressed,
Chilled by the midnight air.
Turn here, turn there—
No matter where,
The streetlights lead me there.

For it’s not just me that’s here to think.

The city welcomes we.

Eccentric souls that paint the streets,
The hustle and bustle,
The wine and dine,
All hard workers getting by.

It’s so easy to think, “Just I,”
And give a wailing cry.
But in the end,
You have a friend,
Because the city welcomes we.

ABOUT THE POET

Writing has always been a beloved passion of Stormy Powell’s, from poetry and short stories to chapter books.

Her poem The City Welcomes We was inspired by her first week living in St. Paul. After moving nearly eight hours from her hometown of Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, Stormy experienced the initial loneliness that can come with starting over in a new city. A walk along the river became the beginning of her journey toward meeting new friends, discovering her surroundings, and finding her place within the St. Paul community.
