SKYWAY HABITRAIL
My California friends call it
my “hamster habitat,” remembering
the translucent, colored plastic tubes
of our childhoods, through which
our tiny starter pets would scurry.
I like the idea.
What we need are giant bottles bolted
to the walls, extending metal tubes
whose ball-bearinged tips we could lick
for water or coffee or beer.
And people-sized spinner wheels
on which we could burn away the calories
on our walks home from the bar.
And beds of wood chips where we could snuggle
with the furred bodies of our fellow denizens
of his human habitat.
