Saint Paul, MN
THE CITY MUSEUM
Eager tourists pour off the buses
and stream into the gates of the
War Remnants Museum
impatient to view war materials
cannons, helicopters, planes, mortars, Humvees
guns, military gear, land mines
remnants of the American War
They pass beggars with no hands to hold the
containers for alms,
blind to the blind, dismembered youth,
deformed children,
remnants of the American War.
ABOUT THE POET
Those who wage war seem to forget that the costs of war are far more than the money needed for the hardware and manpower needed to fight. They do not consider the human costs; the wounds inflicted which may ever heal and the innocent who suffer for generations. This struck me very vividly during my visit to Saigon’s War Remnant Museum in December 2004. This poem is what I observed.
I am a downtown resident who frequently walks through the Skyway. I also walk through parks and public gardens as well as through malls when the weather ior air is bad. Bookstores are some of my favorite hangouts. I frequent concert halls, music cafes, and theaters. I volunteer for several theaters and the public library.
