PEGGY ON THE WIND

You came in on a prevailing wind.
Sultry and thick as a 9 th ward accent.
Billowing sails and sheets on a line
Of presence and presents of chalk on a banquette.

“Comment ça va, chère?” to a sweet little girl.
Singing of angels and croaking old toads.
You gifted permission to let art fill her world,
She’s fearless ‘cause you taught her not to need roads.

Ancient seas and waves and beaches unweathered,
Blankets spread out on sands still shifting in motion.
One day, two little girls will lift their gazes together
To that painful straight line between heaven and ocean.

You go in on a prevailing wind.
